These subtle changes to your home decor can make a significant difference in creating a soothing atmosphere.

The Carolina Park Recreation Complex in Mount Pleasant is open to the public, with the completion of the project’s final phases.
SeamonWhiteside, the civil engineering company behind the complex, completed the master plan in 2009, finishing phase one in 2010 and phase two in 2019, Whitner Kane, a landscape architecture team leader at SeamonWhiteside, said.
The team was able to complete phases three and four together after acquiring additional funding from Recreation Capital Improvement Funds and special revenue funds, Kane said.
The $7.8 million park is home to baseball and softball fields, batting cages, pickleball and basketball courts, a dog park, pond and other nature trails.
“Mount Pleasant’s grown significantly since 2009, especially in recreation through the Mount Pleasant rec department is really, really popular,” Kane said. “Scheduling of fields and adding fields has been a priority.”
The only elements of the complex’s plan which haven’t been completed are a few nature trails and boardwalks, Kane said. The group will depend on funding for whether those final touches will be completed.
In addition to civil engineering, SeamonWhiteside provides services such as landscape architecture, master planning, water resources engineering, construction administration and land surveying, according to their website.
The group has a history of development through South Carolina, completing projects for Clemson University and the Medical University of South Carolina, as well as the Greenville Top Golf and Charleston’s Credit One Stadium.

Founded 40 years ago, SeamonWhiteside now has six offices, Mount Pleasant serving as the “home base,” Kane said, along with Summerville, Greenville, Spartanburg in South Carolina and Charlotte and Raleigh in North Carolina.
Kane said that each region of South Carolina has its own challenges: Charleston has a lot of flat land but needs to work around wetlands, whereas the Upstate has less flat land and works more towards level construction ground.
SeamonWhiteside’s next project is Rifle Range Road Park, and expects to have the design and permits completed to start construction in spring of 2025, according to the town of Mount Pleasant website.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The early voting period is coming to a close Saturday across South Carolina.
Early voting began on Oct. 21 and election officials saw record numbers for turnout. This year marks the first time the state has done one of these periods that is open to any voter, and especially for a presidential election.
“People are excited about this year’s presidential election,” Rosie Brown, director of Berkeley County voter registration and elections, said. “Since early voting, we have seen a phenomenal turnout all over the county. People are wanting to get out and get their vote heard. And they’re participating in early voting in record numbers.”
Isaac Cramer, executive director of Charleston County board of elections, echoed the same message. Mount Pleasant is one of their busiest polling locations and said they are moving the lines as much as they can.
“Here in Mount Pleasant, wait times are 20 to 30 minutes,” Cramer said. “We’re seeing the most voters in the state at this location, so even if you see a line, they’re moving really quickly.”
Charleston County recorded nearly 120,000 votes since early voting began. Although they aren’t seeing as many people show up as last week, many were expected today.
“It seems today is the busiest day, which is what we expected – Friday, last Friday before the election, to be the biggest turnout,” Cramer said. “One thing, we’re just encouraging voters is you still have one more day – it’s tomorrow, from 8:30 to 6.”
Berkeley County added 30 in-person voting machines and 2 more to curbside vote to relieve the wait times this week. Officials said they recorded around 50,000 votes. However, voters are coming to cast their ballots at all hours and there is not necessarily an off-peak time. Brown said one trend she noticed last week, that may be helpful for those going to the polls on the last day.
“People usually get up early on Saturday mornings to do their early voting,” Brown said. “We did notice last Saturday that once the college football games started coming on TV or people going out to those games, the line became shorter at that point in time of that day.”

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCSC)- The final site review for a food, entertainment, and public gathering space was approved by Mount Pleasant’s commercial design review board on Wednesday night.
The space is called Gather Mount Pleasant and will be located on Midtown Avenue right across from MUSC Midtown in Mount Pleasant and off of HungryNeck Boulevard.
The co-developer of Gather Mount Pleasant, Mack Cross, said that this project will cost $14 million. He said he wants it to serve as a place for friends and families to come and enjoy time together.
“Spend time, you know, ideally away from screens and have conversation, meet neighbors here, host out of town visitors,” Cross said. “A place that Preston, our other partner and co-developer, are really kind of planning for families like ours and a place where we would like to meet our community and spend time.”
Cross said Gather Mount Pleasant will have a similar atmosphere to the Gather location in Greenville, South Carolina but it will be bigger. Along with a variety of food and beverage options and live music like Gather Greenville, the Mount Pleasant location will have additional features like retail, office and salon space.
However, the site Gather Mount Pleasant will sit on has a residential community right next to it called Midtown Townes and Cross said they have had to modify their designs because of some residents’ concerns.
“We reduced the scale of the project. Originally we had a hotel component, but we have since gotten rid of that. The economy changed through the process, so that was a factor as well, you know, so just navigating all those different factors and really wanting to be thoughtful about the design and making sure that it’s a great fit for this site and this community,” Cross said.
One of the concerns previously expressed was noise, however, Cross said they have addressed this with the setup of the project and wouldn’t be having live music played late at night.
“So the scale of the building and where the stage is located within the project the buildings will provide some natural sound screening for that stage, but yes, we are sensitive that this is a residential area,” Cross said.
Many residents of the townhomes spoke during the public comment session of the meeting. One of their main concerns was about an entrance and exit point for commercial vehicles located on Fortier Drive which many of the residents said this road is essentially a driveway for them. They said with that road already being narrow and having commercial vehicles come through they worried about what congestion it could bring.
Mac Deford, a local politician, is one of those residents. He said that he thinks his community would be overall supportive of this project if they addressed this issue and found an alternative access point for commercial vehicles that doesn’t include Fortier Drive.
“I think as long as they are not using our private road, what is an alleyway, clogging it up with commercial traffic which you know would create a lot of safety concerns and hazards, I think they would have the overwhelming support of our community,” Deford said.
During the meeting, officials assured residents they examined various places to put this access point but that this was the best spot.
Cross said he believes the project they have designed now is the best concept they could be bringing to the area. Now that the commercial design review board has approved, Cross said the next steps would be for them to finish their construction drawings and then submit those to the Town of Mount Pleasant for building permit approval.
He said they hope to break ground in early spring or summer with construction expected to be completed in the middle of 2026.
“It is a place for many occasions, spontaneous occasions. It’s really hard to go out with a big family or multiple families and find a place to eat that’s welcoming and you know not too expensive and you know where you’re not disrupting people,” Cross said. “I can think of numerous occasions of times where you know we will end up here and hopefully others will too.”

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCSC) - A new resource center called The Haven had its grand opening Saturday in Mount Pleasant.
The Haven caters to children and families within the foster care, adoption and kinship community. The non-profit organization is one of the ministries at City Life Church and has been in the works for years.
It has been designed to look like a boutique where foster and adoption care children and families can shop without worrying about the cost.
“We want it to be a beautiful, safe place, which is kind of the plan behind the name Haven,” ministry coordinator Megan Seavers said.
The Craswells are expecting to be certified foster parents later this year and they say it’s comforting to know this is an option for children they may welcome into their home.
“It’s helpful for us because we know there’s a place where we can bring any children in our care and pick things out,” future foster parent Emily Craswell said. “I don’t want to have to tell a child they can’t have it because it’s not in the budget right now. So, here they can come and pick these really beautiful clothes and feel good about themselves.”
They said they’re aware of how traumatic foster care may be, so a resource center like The Haven can help with that transition.
“From what we understand, they could happen overnight, not even overnight leahy, your doorstep and we might not be prepared at all for that and to know that there’s a place like this around is really, really helpful,” foster parent Paul Craswell said.
The Haven will be open three days out of the week on Tuesday mornings, Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.
Seavers says she knows the foster, kinship and adoption care process can be unexpected at times, so this space allows an opportunity for families to come pick up a few things they may need--from clothes, toys, books, swaddles, shoes and hygiene and self-care items.
“Just because you don’t have resources doesn’t mean that you should have the leftovers,” Seavers said.
Seavers says they want this space to make children and families feel safe and special.
“We’re just coming alongside the community of adoption pastor and ship and really just saying, we’re here for you, Seavers said. “We know it’s hard, we know it takes a lot of time and money and we’re here for you. We just want this to kind of grow into more than just tangible resources, but into how can we serve you mentally emotionally spiritually and tangibly”

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCSC) - Pedestrian safety continues to be an issue in Mount Pleasant, so Town leaders are working to make the roads more accessible for non-motorized users.
The Town has been working on the Hamlin Trail project for over a year. The project runs parallel to Rifle Range Road - extending the bike and pedestrian paths from the Vaughn Ed Kee Parkway project.
The Hamlin Trail project is a $475,000 project funded in cooperation with the South Carolina Recreational Trails Program grant which contributed $100,000 toward construction.
This project added 1,700 feet of new bike and pedestrian paths to use. The new paths are 10 feet wide making them “shared-use paths.”
They have just completed the Hamlin Trail pedestrian bridge which is the first pedestrian bridge along the Mount Pleasant Way - a proposed network of 47 miles of connected multi-use paths for cyclists and pedestrians to have safer and more efficient alternative modes of transportation, as pedestrian safety has been a huge priority in the town.
The new addition of these paths at Hamlin Trail also provided access to the parking area for Rifle Range Park. The ultimate goal is to improve pedestrian and cyclist accessibility and safety.
Abby Hartmann Kukes is a resident in the area training for the New York City marathon. She says the Hamlin Trail project is important to herself and other distance runners in the area as there are not currently many safe options for them. She believes this was a necessary addition to the town.
“I think there’s not enough recreational areas, in particular, paved runways like this. I think a lot of areas, you know like over in West Ashley, there’s a greenway, and stuff like that. Mount Pleasant doesn’t really have anything like that. So, I think [the Town] needs something like that,” Hartmann Kukes says.
Hartmann Kukes says that she feels this addition also really allows her and other distance runners to avoid the busy roads in the town and run safely and more efficiently.
“I think it’s a good addition to everything because it’s a safe pathway for runners and it helps along a busy road to give us an opportunity to get more mileage in and in a safe environment,” she says.
Hartmann Kukes says she plans to use this new path and bridge all the time in the future, and she is excited to have the opportunity to do so now. Now that the Town of Mount Pleasant has completed the Hamlin Trail Pedestrian Bridge, Deputy Director of the Capital Projects and Transportation Department for Mount Pleasant James Aton says that they only have a few minor items to address before they can close the project in its entirety, but it is essentially complete.
